Thomas Whelan is a visionary leader in the meetings and events industry, recognized for his expertise in food and beverage innovation, large-scale event operations, and hospitality leadership. In 2024, he was named both a Smart Speaker by Smart Meetings Magazine and a Meetings Trendsetter by Meetings Today, further cementing his reputation as an industry trailblazer. His accolades also include recognition in the BizBash 500, MeetingsNet Changemakers, and Connect Corporate's 40 Under 40. In 2022, BizBash Magazine honored him as an Industry Innovator for redefining food and beverage experiences. As the Director of Events for the Northeast at Access DMC, Thomas brings nearly two decades of expertise in elevating event experiences and driving operational excellence. Previously, he served as Assistant General Manager for Levy Convention Centers at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and Director of Operations at The Franklin Institute, leading large-scale teams and delivering exceptional hospitality at premier venues. Throughout his career, he has successfully launched and scaled both on-premise and off-premise catering ventures, curating world-class experiences for corporate and social events that have hosted millions of guests. Beyond his operational contributions, Thomas is a passionate advocate for the advancement of the hospitality industry. He is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of hospitality leaders and is a strong champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the meetings and events community. In recognition of his dedication to inclusion in the industry, he was honored in 2025 as an inaugural recipient of the Smart Ally Award by Smart Meetings Magazine. Thomas currently serves on the Board of Directors for the SEARCH Foundation and has previously held leadership roles as a Board Member of the LGBT Meeting Professionals Association and as President of the Massachusetts Live Events Coalition. Now based in Washington, D.C., Thomas continues to drive innovation in the industry while enjoying time at home with his ever-charismatic, oversized orange cat, Alroy.
